The objective of this study was to analyze the incidence of occupational accidents in the state of Minas Gerais from January 2017 to December 2022, as well as the respective trends in the time series and main sectors/activities affected. Information available in public databases was used, for example, in the Statistical Yearbooks of Occupational Accidents (AEAT) of the Social Security, as well as data available in the SmartLab panel, a joint initiative of the MPT and the ILO Brazil. Based on the analysis of the information and the use of the Hodrick-Prescott (HP) filter, it was possible to evaluate patterns and characteristics of occupational accidents. Thus, it was possible to observe that there is a slight upward trend in the occurrence of occupational accidents. The findings are consistent with the data processed in SmartLab and point to a worrying situation, which predominantly affects sectors of economic activity known to be at higher risk, such as logging and road freight transportation. Therefore, such information serves as an adequate parameter to direct public policies and focus inspection activities. However, it is necessary to take into account the situation of informality in the Brazilian labor market, and one of its facets, which is the failure to report work accidents by responsible parties, which can lead to inaccurate predictions.
